Best Outdoor Activities

• Baseball. A baseball game under a summer sky is an all-American pleasure. It is a family-bonding opportunity, and, happily, ticket prices for the Savannah Sand Gnats (a New York Mets farm-system affiliate) start at just $8. Buy a hot dog and join in the fun. On Friday nights kids get to run the bases after the game, and on Saturday nights there are fireworks, so you can double your fun for the cost of admission.

• Biking. Forsyth and Daffin parks are favored destinations for locals. Rails-to-Trails is a 3-mile route that starts 1 mile east of the Bull River Bridge on Highway 80 and ends at the entrance to Fort Pulaski. Tom Triplett Park, east of town on U.S. 80, offers three bike loops—3.5 miles, 5 miles, and 6.3 miles. You can explore quaint Tybee Island by bike for nearly half of what it costs to rent a bike downtown.

• Golf. The weather here, particularly in the spring and fall, is custom ordered for a round or two of golf. Though the courses aren’t as well regarded as those on Hilton Head, players looking for a challenge can count on gems like the Westin’s Club at Savannah Harbor and the Wilmington Island Club, both of which are more moderately priced than the Hilton Head courses.

• Water Sports. Water sports are the obvious choice for a city surrounded by rivers, creeks, marshes, and the Atlantic Ocean. Kayaking, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and kiteboarding are all popular, and there are plenty of options for guided tours, charter boats, and equipment rental (if you haven’t brought your own).
